Dahlia Information

Growing Dahlias

Dahlias are the Root of a Plant

  • Tubers are the exact replica of the plant that they came from, they hold the DNA of a dahlia plant/flower.

  • Tubers are not pretty. They grow in the dirt, get dug up, washed but still get planted back in the dirt!  There's nothing beautiful about them but plant them and just wait to see what they become!  A masterpiece, a surprise or like I say it's like opening "A Christmas present!"

  • The size of the tuber isn't too relevant.  However, you don't want one too small in width (smaller than the width of a #2 pencil) as it will not store well or too big as it has so many nutrients that it may not produce more quality tubers or develop a large root system.  I generally cut a really large tuber in half before I plant it.

  • It may be hard for you to believe, but a tuber the size of your thumb can be a perfect size!  However, whatever size of tuber you plant, if it is healthy, it will provide you with a beautiful plant as long as it is watered and fed throughout the growing season.

  • Tubers only need one viable eye to grow. The eyes are on the crown, not on the body like a potato. Some tubers have a crown and long necks, while some have virtually very little neck and the eyes grow right on the area where the crown and body meet.

  • Feeder tubers grown off of a tuber that has a crown and a neck.  Generally, on the sides or bottom of the tuber.  Feeder tubers are not viable.

Dahlia Seeds

Each Dahlia seed that comes from a Dahlia seed pod is genetically unique.  Meaning any seed that you plant will not be an exact replica of its parent plant.  Nothing like a tuber!   It will be a mystery as to what the flower from this plant will look like.

If you end up really like a seedling that you get, you can take dig those tubers up in the fall and replant it the following year to get the exact replica again.

However, it takes 3 grow seasons for a new seedling to stabilize.

And then....you can name it, share it with the Dahlia community and register it if you choose to do so!
